FSF - Phonemic Awareness Identify Initial Sounds
The purpose of this activity is for students to practice isolating the first sound in a word, and to identify other words that start with that same sound.

Warm Up
We're going to play a game where I tell you a word, and then you tell me another word that starts with the same sound.
Listen to me do one. The first word is "fish." "Fish" begins with the sound /f/. Then I think of other words that begin with /f/. I could say "feather," "feet," or "fun."

Let's do one together. The word is "soup." What's the first sound in "soup"? What other words begin with /s/?
If Correct: That's right. The word was "soup," and the first sound in "soup" is /s/. The words you said, (repeat responses), all begin with the /s/ sound.
If Incorrect: Let's think about it together. The word is "soup." What sound does "soup" start with? /s/ Can you think of another word that begins with the /s/ sound?

Now it's your turn. The next word is "mouse." Say the first sound in "mouse." Then think of other words that begin with that sound.
If Correct: Great. That's a good choice because (student's response) begins with /m/.
If Incorrect: Let's think about it together. The word is "mouse." What sound does "mouse" start with? /m/ Can you think of another word that begins with the /m/ sound?
